What is ski touring?

Ski touring is the combination of alpine mountain hiking and off-piste skiing, without the use of ski lifts. It is also called backcountry skiing or ski mountaineering (skimo).

This challenging winter sport is not for everyone. Ski tourers 'hike' up the mountain themselves, far away from the prepared slopes. This requires special materials, such as special skis with skins, boots and bindings.

The descent is also off the beaten track, so you often have the mountain landscape all to yourself. The descent is similar to off-piste skiing, where you have to take into account different types of snow.

In the valley of Benasque

you can find the highest peaks of the Pyrenees. This makes it not only a stunning place in winter, but it also offers perfect conditions for ski touring. Because of the great heights you can often make beautiful treks until late in the season.

There are plenty of one-day routes that start from the valley. You can also opt for a trekking, where you sleep in different mountain huts.

We always recommend this activity accompanied by a certified mountain guide.

Introduction to ski touring

Would you like to gain your first ski touring experience? At Chill-Outdoor we are happy to help you. We work with several local outdoor companies that specialise in winter activities.

During the introduction to ski touring you get to know the necessary equipment, you can improve your off-piste skiing techniques with a professional mountain guide and you get to know all aspects of ski touring in the mountains.

You can also combine ski touring with a day of skiing on the slopes or snow hiking with special snowshoes.

Multi-day ski touring trek

Do you have experience with ski touring and want to take it to the next level? At Chill-Outdoor we offer a multi-day ski touring trek in the beautiful nature park of Posets-Maladeta.

During this 5-day trip you will make three or four spectacular climbs and sleep in different mountain huts. Accompanied by a professional mountain guide you reach heights of over 3,000m.
