In the region you can enjoy nature, but there are also beautiful mountain villages. Each with local shops, restaurants and historical squares. Looking for a charming village? Visit Graus, Aínsa or Alquézar. Do you want to go to a bigger city? Then visit Barbastro, Huesca or the capital of Aragon: Zaragoza.

The ancient village square of Graus

Graus is the capital of the Ribagorza province. That seems like a lot, but we are only talking about 3400 inhabitants. Residents from the area do their shopping in Graus, have a drink on one of the terraces and the children go to school there. 

The town square 'Plaza Mayor' is definitely worth a visit: with its decorated facades, traditional arches, colourful houses and paintings. Most of the buildings on this square are from the 16th century.

  • On the square you can grab a terrace, visit the market on Monday mornings or attend one of the events in the summer. It is the place for traditional festivities.
  • From 12 to 15 September are the annual festivities of the village. In 1973 the celebration received the qualification 'Interés Turístico Nacional'. It is a combination of local folklore and modern acts.
  • And, not to forget... Graus is in the Guinness Book of Records with no less than 2 world records: they prepare the longest grilled sausage 'Longaniza' (over 500 meters) on the largest barbecue grill (25 m2) in the world. Every July, they grill a new one. Every year 1 meter extra.

The medieval mountain village of Ainsa

is on the list of 'the most beautiful villages in Spain'. Its history goes back to the Moors. The old town is located on top of the hill with a nice view over the river valley. In the 1970s, the old part of Aínsa was declared a monumental city area. That is why the old center looks the same as in the Middle Ages. With narrow streets, a beautiful square and a big castle.

The modern part consists of a long shopping street, where you can buy local products or try a menu of the day in one of the restaurants. Aínsa is strategically located between the Pyrenees and the Sierra de Guara, and close to the Bielsa tunnel, which connects Spain to France.

The historical-artistic Alquézar

is situated at an altitude of 660 meters and is also on the list of 'the most beautiful villages in Spain'. The houses of the village are all built in the same style, which perfectly match with the stunning limestone landscape.

Stroll through the narrow streets and over the characteristic squares. In the city walls and the monumental church of Alquézar (which is descended from Arabic and literally means: fortress) you can see the traces of different cultural movements that have been left behind over the centuries.

Enjoy the view points over the 'Sierra y Cañones de Guara' nature park or walk the route 'Pasarelas de Alquezar'. A fun hike over foot bridges along the river and rock formations. An ideal getaway for families.
