Active autumn holiday in the Spanish Pyrenees

Outdoor adventure, beautiful nature and plenty of time to enjoy it

September and October are some of the best months for an active holiday in the Spanish Pyrenees. The summer crowds have gone, temperatures are pleasant for outdoor activities and the mountains gradually turn into a spectacular palette of autumn colours.

Stay in the beautiful medieval town of Aínsa and choose between a comfortable hotel or a modern apartment. Then create your own outdoor programme: go hiking in Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, ride the famous mountain bike trails of Zona Zero, try a via ferrata or rock climbing or explore a canyon.

Your autumn adventure, your choice

  • Choose your accommodation: hotel or apartment in Aínsa
  • Create your own outdoor programme
  • Travel at your own pace: minimum stay of 4 nights
  • No fixed arrival or departure days
  • Combine outdoor adventures with hiking, culture, gastronomy and time to relax

There is no fixed group programme to follow. You decide how active you want your holiday to be and we help you create an itinerary that suits your interests, experience and level.

Why visit the Spanish Pyrenees in September and October?

Autumn is a fantastic time for an outdoor holiday in the Spanish Pyrenees. The busy summer season is over, while daytime temperatures are often ideal for hiking, mountain biking, climbing and other outdoor activities.

September still has a wonderfully late-summer feel. The days are long enough for mountain hikes and bike rides, while the trails and mountains are already considerably quieter than in July and August.

In October, the landscape begins to change colour. The forests of Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park are particularly spectacular at this time of year, with beech forests turning yellow, orange and red against the dramatic limestone cliffs of the Pyrenees.

Autumn is also an excellent season for mountain biking, via ferrata and rock climbing. Many of the climbing areas have south-facing rock walls, making September and October particularly pleasant months for climbing.

The Pyrenees are also a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. Around Aínsa and Ordesa you will regularly see griffon vultures circling high above the mountains and, with a little luck, you may spot a bearded vulture (lammergeier), Egyptian vulture or golden eagle. If you would like to learn more about these impressive birds, you can head out with an experienced local guide to observe vultures and other birds of prey.

And after an active day? Head back to Aínsa for a drink on a terrace, some tapas and a good dinner.

Aínsa: a perfect base for an outdoor holiday in the Pyrenees

Aínsa is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in northern Spain and a fantastic base for an active holiday. Its historic centre, with cobbled streets, old stone houses, castle and atmospheric Plaza Mayor, is a wonderful place to explore after a day in the mountains.

For mountain bikers, Aínsa is particularly well known as the home of Zona Zero, one of Europe's best-known mountain biking destinations. Hundreds of kilometres of old trails and singletrack make the area suitable for recreational mountain bikers and e-MTB riders as well as experienced trail riders.

Within easy reach of Aínsa lies Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the Spanish Pyrenees. Explore it independently or head into the mountains with a professional guide.

To the south lies the Sierra de Guara, famous for its spectacular gorges, limestone cliffs and canyons. This means you can experience surprisingly different landscapes and outdoor activities from a single base in Aínsa.

And Aínsa isn't just about outdoor sports. Its restaurants, terraces and local gastronomy make it just as easy to combine active days with good food and a slower pace.

Multi-adventure: create your own outdoor programme

An active holiday means something different to everyone. You might come to the Pyrenees mainly for mountain biking and decide to add a via ferrata. Perhaps you would rather combine hiking with canyoning and rock climbing. Or you may simply want a few adventurous days mixed with good food, sightseeing and plenty of time to relax.

That is why we don't work with one fixed activity programme.

Choose the activities you would like to add to your stay and we will help you create a programme that fits your experience, fitness level and interests.

In September and October, you can choose from activities including:

  • Hiking – independently or with a mountain guide, from relaxed day walks to challenging mountain hikes
  • Mountain biking / e-MTB – discover the trails of Zona Zero at your own level
  • Via ferrata – follow protected climbing routes across spectacular rock faces
  • Rock climbing – try outdoor climbing for the first time or take your climbing skills to the next level
  • Canyoning – explore one of the spectacular canyons of the region with a professional guide
  • Paragliding – experience the mountains from above on a tandem flight
  • Wildlife & vulture watching – head out with a local guide in search of bearded vultures, griffon vultures and other birds of prey

Rafting, kayaking and hydrospeed are not available in September and October.

You certainly don't have to book an organised activity every day. Take time to go hiking on your own, explore a mountain village, enjoy a long lunch or simply do nothing for a while. It is your holiday, after all.

And you don't need to be a highly experienced athlete. Many activities can be adapted to different fitness and experience levels. If you're looking for a serious challenge, just let us know — we can take that into account too.

Een kleine relaxte camping, met hele aardige eigenaren Jochem en Judith, de barman Mathijs en de kok Bo. Een heerlijke sfeer in een prachtige omgeving. Mooie uitvalsbasis voor o.a raften, wildwaterkanoën enz. Mooi en schoon sanitair.
Wij komen zeker terug.
