In the 1960s many Spaniards exchanged their village life (in the mountains) for a life in the city. In other cases villagers had to leave their homes involuntarily. As a result, there are hundreds of abandoned villages in the Aragon region alone, each with its own interesting story.

Visit one of the abandoned villages

and get fascinated by the location, old churches and remains of the country houses. Some of these abandoned villages are being rebuilt, others are slowly being taken over by nature. In general, the villages are remote, but can be easily reached on foot or by mountain bike. In some cases you can also visit the abandoned villages by car.

Do you want to visit an abandoned village? Let us know and we'll inform about the possibilities. We know about some beautiful hiking and mountain bike trails that cross these types of villages. In addition, it is often an excellent picnic spot.

A selection of several abandoned villages in the Ribagorza: Caballera, Cancer, Castarlenas, GrustĂĄn, Finestras, Fantova, Portaspana ...

We advise you to be careful entering the old houses of these abandoned villages. They are not maintained, so there is a risk of collapse.

New life and stunning views

Sometimes there are developments that bring new life to the (abandoned) villages. An example is the village of Panillo. Which was revived by the arrival of the 'Day Shang KagyĂŒ' in the 1980s, the largest Buddhist temple complex in Spain.

You can visit the complex by foot or on the mountain bike, starting from our Chill-Outdoor CafĂ© in PerarrĂșa. Following this beautiful shortcut route, you will cross the abandoned villages of Arues and Ejep. You can also go by car from Graus.

Want to extend your the trip by bike? Or taking the car to visit the place? Then make sure to also visit the village of Pano. This village, consisting of one street, is currently being rebuilt by one family and has amazing views over the Cinca valley.
