Donkey Trekking in the Spanish Pyrenees

Guided Walking Holiday with Donkeys – Adventure, Nature & Simplicity

Would you like to experience the Pyrenees in a truly authentic way? During this multi-day donkey trek in the Spanish Pyrenees, you hike together with our local mountain guides, a cook and a small caravan of friendly donkeys.

They carry the luggage – you carry only your daypack – leaving you free to enjoy the silence, the fresh air and the feeling of pure freedom. (Technically, our “donkeys” are mules – stronger and better adapted to mountain terrain – but in the Pyrenees, everyone simply calls them donkeys.)

Each day brings new landscapes, from wild valleys to alpine meadows and rocky peaks. In the evenings, you’ll camp near a mountain lake or a small chapel, share freshly prepared meals and fall asleep under a sky full of stars.

This journey is ideal for families, small groups and nature lovers who want to slow down, disconnect and reconnect with what really matters.

Why choose this donkey trekking holiday?

  • Hike without heavy backpacks – our donkeys carry all camping and kitchen gear.
  • Camp in unique natural settings – beside lakes, rivers and mountain meadows.
  • Guided by an experienced team – local mountain guides, cook and assistants.
  • Perfect for families and kids (7+) – children love helping with the donkeys!
  • Sustainable & small-scale – local partners, minimal impact, maximum experience.

Itinerary – Day by Day

Welcome!

Today you arrive at the mountain village, where you’ll spend your first night in a cosy mountain inn. In the evening you’ll meet your trekking guides and – if applicable – the other participants. During dinner you’ll get to know the group, receive practical information, and hear all about the coming days in the Pyrenees.

Camping by the lake

After breakfast we transfer to the starting point of our trek. Guided by experienced mountain guides, we hike through rugged mountain scenery towards our camp at the mountain lake. The donkeys carry the luggage, so you can fully enjoy the views, the fresh mountain air and the peace of the valley.

Once we arrive at the lake, there’s time to relax, swim, and enjoy a freshly prepared dinner by the campfire – a magical first night under the stars.

Climb to the summit of Peña de las Diez

Today you can choose between several activities: a gentle walk around the camp, fossil hunting with the kids, or the exciting climb to Peña de las Diez (2,568 m).

The route starts right from the camp, crossing a limestone landscape with rocky formations, alpine meadows and scattered pine trees. At the summit, you’re rewarded with a 360° view over the valleys and peaks of the central Pyrenees – an unforgettable highlight of the week.

High-mountain hiking day

After breakfast we break camp and continue our trek towards the chapel of la Plana. The landscape gradually changes from bare limestone slopes to wooded hillsides and flower-filled mountain pastures.

We follow ancient shepherds’ paths, take breaks at scenic viewpoints and finally pitch our tents beside the centuries-old chapel of La Plana. In the evening we enjoy a relaxed barbecue dinner in nature.

Adventure between rocks and waterfalls

We start the day with a short walk (30–60 min) to the canyon entrance. Led by a certified canyoning guide, you descend into one of the most beautiful gorges in the Pyrenees – climbing, sliding and abseiling past waterfalls and rock walls.

A day full of adrenaline, teamwork and fun – the perfect finale to this active week. Afterwards we return to the inn for a well-deserved rest and a shared dinner.

⏱️ 1.5–3 hours canyoning (depending on chosen route)

Goodbye!

After a good night’s sleep and hearty breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to the guides and donkeys. You’ll continue your journey – full of fresh energy and unforgettable memories.

If you’d like to extend your stay, you’re welcome at Chill-Outdoor in Perarrúa for a few extra days of relaxation or more outdoor fun.

Would you like a bit more comfort? For an additional fee, the first and last night can be upgraded to a ***hotel with swimming pool instead of the mountain inn.

Period

The donkey trek runs in July and August (see available dates at the top of the page).

Our donkeys

The mules and donkeys belong to the local family who organises this trek (technically, they are mules – the cross between a donkey and a horse – perfectly suited for carrying loads in steep mountain terrain.).

They live freely in pastures near their home when not on expedition, and are treated with great care. Each animal carries a limited, well-balanced load to ensure comfort and safety. Before every season, the trails are checked and maintained for their well-being.

Fitness level & minimum age

You don’t need to be a top athlete, but a reasonable fitness level is required — especially if you plan to climb the Peña de las Diez. Expect to walk around 5 hours a day in mountainous terrain.

Groups generally consist of 8 – 13 participants. Would you prefer to travel privately with your own family or group of friends? That’s possible – just let us know your preferences.

Minimum age: 7 years

Would definitely recommend to a friend.

Super aanrader.
