Did you know that a mountain lake is also called an ‘ibón’ in Aragonese? A natural phenomenon created during the ice age by the glaciers of the Pyrenees.
Local and nature value
Mountain lakes are scarce in Spain and the largest number can be found in Aragon. The use of the name ‘ibón’ shows the local value and traditional culture. The mountain lakes are not only special because of their shapes and locations, but they are also of great value to nature. They regulate rivers and form an important ecosystem for flora and fauna. Did you know that it’s not allowed to swim in these clear blue waters?
Visiting mountain lakes
Most ‘ibones’ are located at an altitude of more than 2500m, but they can also be visited below 2000m. There are options for every hiker: a tough hike to a higher peak, a tour along various viewpoints or a route suitable for the youngest of the family.
Do you already know which Ibón you want to see?
We have listed a number of options for you, all located in the Posets-Maladeta National Park:
1. Ibón de Escarpinosa:
a real gem in the Pyrenees. The hike starts in Valle de Estós in the Benasque Valley. After a climb of about 700m you will be rewarded with beautiful views. In the calm water you can see the reflection of the surrounding trees and mountain peaks. You can combine a visit to this lake with the ‘Ibon de Batisielles’.
2. Ibón Blanco de Literola:
Also located in the Benasque valley, the hike to this lake is a lot more challenging. Yet, the routes to it are incredible. From the Remuñé Valley or through the Literola Valley, you follow the flowing rivers, surrounded by the 3000m peaks. Even in summer snow or ice can be seen in the lake.
3. Ibón de Plan:
also known as Basa de la Mora. This large lake is surrounded by huge rock masses, pine forests and green meadows on its banks. There are several easy routes with little elevation, to be started from the Gistaín Valley.
4. Ibones de Villamuerta:
these two lakes are gorgeous and easy to visit. The lower lake in particular is ideal for a visit with young children. It takes about 1.5/2 hours to cross both lakes. Starting from the mountain hut la Besurta, almost at the end of the valley, it’s like walking into a postcard.
5. Reservoir and Ibón de Llauset:
just before crossing the border with Catalunya we find a lesser-known area of the park, but it is certainly no less beautiful. By car you can drive up to an altitude of 2000m, to the Llauset reservoir. From here you can make a fantastic circular hike through a pristine landscape and along surprisingly beautiful ‘ibones’.
Tip! Some of these mountain lakes can be visited during the hiking tours, such as the mountain hut tour or the mule trekking.
