A hut-to-hut trek with the family

Spending several days in the mountains with your children? We believe it’s a unique and memorable experience for the whole family. Here’s why:

1. Quality time in nature

Escape from the distractions of everyday life and enjoy the outdoors together. No phones, no Wi-Fi—just hiking through stunning mountain landscapes. Sing songs or enjoy the silence and sounds of nature. Let your kids help navigate the trails and discover nice picnic spots by the mountain lakes. These are moments that create lasting memories.

2. Encourages kids’ ability to overcome challenges

Walking for hours, especially with elevation gain, can be quite a challenge. But along the way, children develop persistence and gain confidence as they overcome challenges. Don’t we all feel proud when we achieve our goals?

3. Adventure and learning in the wild

Walking along narrow paths, crossing streams, climbing over rock blocks and spotting wildlife. A hut-to-hut trek is an adventure! Your kids can learn about nature in a playful way (with a little help from parents or even a mountain guide).

4. Stay in a mountain hut

After an active day, the kids have reached their goal for the day: the mountain hut! Now you can relax at the picnic tables with a cold drink. Have a look at the map together to see the route you’ve walked, all while enjoying the stunning location of the huts. With a deck of cards or another game, you’ll add some extra fun. In the evening, you sit down at the table with fellow hikers. And have you seen how many stars appear in this remote spot when it gets dark?

5. A lasting experience in the mountains

Maybe in the moment of climbing the mountain—while your heart rate rises and your breath quickens—it’s not the best moment to think about it. But you can be sure, the experience of this multi-day trek in the mountains will stay with you for a lifetime!

There are some challenges to consider, of course…

Okay, so far a hut-to-hut trek sounds great! But, of course, there are challenges to consider
What should you keep in mind?

1. Physical fitness and endurance

Hiking with kids means considering their endurance. Hiking in the mountains can be quite tiring, especially if you’re not used to elevation changes or hiking multiple days in a row (which applies to adults as well!) That’s why it’s important to choose routes that match your children’s fitness level and adjust for their ages and experience.

2. Planning

Keep in mind that when hiking with young children, you will walk at a slower pace. Plan for significantly more time than you would normally need for the route. Sometimes, you may need up to one and a half to two times the time indicated on the trail signs.

3. Flexibility and extra breaks

You’ll probably hear it several times during the trek: “How much longer?” or “I really can’t go any further.” This might be a signal that your child is getting bored. Fatigue, as well as heat/cold, can create additional challenges. That’s why it’s important to be flexible during the hike: take short breaks frequently (but don’t sit for too long!). Playing a game or setting small milestones can also work well, such as:

  • Who can spot the next trail marker first?
  • I spy with my little eye

  • When we reach the mountain lake, then…
  • What animals can you spot?

4. Comfort in the mountain hut

Let’s not romanticise it: the mountain huts are simple, modestly furnished, and you’ll sleep in dormitories with bunk beds. It might take some adjusting, especially if you have a heavy breather in your room
The three-course dinner for the evening is already set. But perhaps it’s this very simplicity that makes staying in the mountain hut so special—going ‘back to basic’.

Practical tips for a hut-to-hut trek with the family

✅ Choose routes suitable for walking with children
On our website, we provide an age recommendation for each trek. If you’re unsure whether your child can handle a particular route, check the daily distances and elevation gains, or contact us for advice on your choice.

✅ Prepare your children (and yourself)
For example, try going on day hikes in the woods or hilly areas at home beforehand. The muscles involved in uphill stretches will need time to adjust—this goes for the parents too! Tell your kids what to expect during the hut-to-hut trek so that the adventure doesn’t become overwhelming.

✅ Plan your breaks
Taking breaks and staying hydrated is essential during the trek. However, don’t always sit down, as it can make starting up again more difficult. If you plan a picnic break, set a time and let your kids know. After a longer stop, take into account that you’ll have to warm up again. Bring enough (healthy) snacks to keep energy up during the hike.

✅ Start well-prepared
Make sure the whole family has the right gear, such as broken-in hiking boots, trekking poles, and a comfortable backpack. Don’t forget spare clothes, earplugs for the hut, a first aid kit, and a game for the evening. But don’t worry! Before you leave for your hut-to-hut trek, we’ll send you a packing list so you won’t forget anything.

✅ Pack your backpacks together
When kids have their own (lighter) backpack, the hiking experience feels more authentic! Involve them in packing your bags for this adventure, so children can enjoy having their own responsibilities.

✅ Phone reception
During the hut-to-hut trek, you won’t always have phone reception. Therefore, it’s a good idea to check the weather forecast for the upcoming days in advance and inform someone at home about your hiking plans. For Chill-Outdoor’s hut-to-hut treks, you’ll also receive a location transmitter, so in case of emergency, you can always reach the emergency services.

✅ Hut-to-hut hike with a mountain guide
You may also consider going with a local mountain guide. This takes away worries and makes your mountain experience even more special. You won’t need to worry about planning or navigating the route, allowing you to fully enjoy nature. A mountain guide’s support can be a great motivator and offer valuable tips for kids while hiking.

But that’s not all
A guide shares insights about the surroundings, such as observing plants, animals and rock formations, telling stories about culture, history, and legends, and pointing out places you might otherwise miss.

Will a hut-to-hut trek with the family be your next getaway?

The answer depends on your family situation. Are your kids motivated and old enough to walk a few hours a day? Are you ready for an adventure together? Then this might just be your next vacation plan!

For families with younger children or beginners, it’s recomendable to start with a short hut-to-hut trek of two or maximum three days. This way, you can see if it’s a good fit for your family.
