This year an autumn visit to the Spanish Pyrenees may not be possible. But next year maybe it is. We’ve listed 6 reasons for you:
The color palette of a new season
The most impressive sight in autumn is the sea of colour of trees in the central Pyrenees. The green forests of oak, pine and beech turn into a colour mix of red, orange, ochre and yellow. All this becomes even more spectacular when the sun sets and an orange glow rises over the valley.
Activities at its best
Maybe it’s not your first association with autumn, but it’s the perfect season to do outdoor activities. Due to the lower but still pleasant temperatures, mountain biking and hiking is a lot more pleasant. Due to the warm summer and therefore the mostly snow-free conditions, mountain lovers without technical equipment can enter the high mountains. And how about rock climbing and via ferrata? The cooler conditions are not only more pleasant during exercise, but also provide more grip on the rocks.
Rare bird watching
Thanks to the type of nature environment, the low population density in the region and the protected status there is a wide variety of bird species to find. The Sierra de Guara and the foothills of the Pyrenees are known for their vulture reserves with the highest known density of this impressive bird. If you are in the Pyrenees in autumn, you can also watch various migratory bird species passing by.
Fruit-ripe fruit
Aragon is a sparsely populated region and is therefore home to agriculture. Several orchards are ripe to be picked in September and October, such as almonds, apples and pears. The season of the vendimia also starts, i.e. the harvest of the grapes on the vineyards. The vintners in the Somontano region like to explain how the entire process works. In addition to the fruit in the fields, you will also be treated to sweet natural gifts in the wild, such as wild blackberries from the end of August or figs in September.
A quieter mid- and low-season
Summer is over. The schools are starting again. Many families have made a turnaround home and we see that in the Pyrenees as well. You’ll have the hiking trails in the nature parks sometimes all to yourself and also in the characteristic villages you walk around quietly. Together with the people in the village or national tourists you can enjoy on the terrace or taste the local cuisine. In addition, all the car parks of the nature parks are again accessible by private transport and you do not have to use shuttle buses.
Travel deals
In the fall, prices fall. The high season is over, we see this in the declining tourism and in the supply of holiday providers. For example, there are often nice flight offers (e.g. a return trip to Barcelona) and local companies start by handling their low season fare.
